Job Details

The Associate Director, Public Affairs will have responsibility for the development of ABHI’s priority public policy positions, successfully ensuring their delivery. The post holder will lead the creation and execution of engagement programmes with relevant institutions of government, NHS organisations, patient advocacy groups and Think Tanks. A key focus will be to elevate the position of ABHI and the HealthTech industry through increased representation and profile across Westminster and the Devolved Administrations.

The role will provide strategic oversight of ABHI’s public affairs activities including direct advocacy, parliamentary activity, and creating and managing formal government platforms and associated workstreams. The post holder will be responsible for supporting the development and coordination of credible, high quality policy input on behalf of the Association, including via its member groups, both proactively and reactively. 

The role will require the individual to support ABHI Directors in their own external engagement. There will also be a responsibility to ensure activity is linked to revenue generation through member recruitment and retention. This position reports to ABHI’s Executive Director of Policy and Partnerships.  

Core accountabilities / responsibilities:

External Affairs

  • Increasing the representation and profile of ABHI and the HealthTech industry in both Westminster and the Devolved Administrations.
  • Manage ABHI’s formal government platforms
  • Co-ordinate with other industry bodies and provide HealthTech representation on the Life Sciences Council secretariat.
  • Provide insights to the ABHI and its members on relevant government policy, activity and work programmes.
  • Manage ABHI’s relationship with relevant external consultants and corresponding outreach programmes ensuring quality and value for money.
  • Lead the development and delivery of industry positions and stakeholder engagement/communications, including the use of evidence-based policy making.
  • Support the communications function with the production of high-quality advocacy materials and ensure they are effectively communicated to members and appropriate external stakeholders.
  • Lead on ad-hoc projects where necessary.
  • Represent ABHI and its members at senior external engagements.
  • Ensure that the ABHI provides high quality, relevant responses to appropriate public consultations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other relevant national and international industry associations.

Membership Engagement 

  • Deliver impactful advocacy, insights and member engagement.
  • Lead the delivery & secretariat support of selected ABHI Member Groups.
  • Advise Members and Member Groups on their external engagement.
  • Play a full and active role in attracting and retaining members.

 Line Management

  • Line management of the Government Affairs Researcher (Intern), providing day-to-day guidance, mentorship and supporting their development.

Key Skills

  • Strong understanding of UK government and parliamentary procedures.
  • Experience influencing government and shaping policy.
  • Ability to develop political narratives based on detailed policy positions.
  • Sound political judgement with apolitical and strategic insight.
  • Line Management skills.
  • Ability to translate complex policy into accessible communications.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
